Human behavior linked to deafness in clown fish!!

"Clownfish are native to wide ranges of the warm waters of the Pacific; some species ranges overlap others. Clownfish are not found in the Atlantic Ocean. Clownfish live in a mutual relationship with sea anemones, or in some case settle in some varieties of soft corals, or large polyp stony corals. Once an anemone or coral has been adopted, the clownfish will defend it vigorously" Source of text and image: .http://masc2279.no-ip.org/Plone/cornerreef/aquarium-fish/salt-water/clownfish-sometimes-excluding-the-maroon-clown-which-can-grow-very-aggressive-and-territorial

In an article entitled,"Ocean Acidification Leaves Clownfish Deaf to Predators" which you can read by clicking on the following link:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/05/110531201221.htm

is it stated that:

"Baby clownfish use hearing to detect and avoid predator-rich coral reefs during the daytime, but new research from the University of Bristol demonstrates that ocean acidification could threaten this crucial behavior within the next few decades."
"Since the Industrial Revolution, over half of all the CO2 produced by burning fossil fuels has been absorbed by the ocean, making pH drop faster than any time in the last 650,000 years and resulting in ocean acidification. Recent studies have shown that this causes fish to lose their sense of smell, but a new study published in Biology Letters shows that fish hearing is also compromised."

Once again we see that humans are causing havoc within another area of the planet, this time the oceans! If the clownfish species are losing their sense of smell and hearing due to the burning of fossil fuels, then surely other fish and other life in the oceans are losing their senses of smell and hearing due to this human activity! This new finding certainly suggests that we humans need to find alternative sources of energy besides fossil fuels to power our cars and heat our houses!

"It was estimated by the Energy Information Administration (In the United States) that in 2007 primary sources of energy consisted of petroleum 36.0%, coal 27.4%, natural gas 23.0%, amounting to an 86.4% share for fossil fuels in primary energy consumption in the world. Non-fossil sources in 2006 included hydroelectric 6.3%, nuclear 8.5%, and others (geothermal, solar, tide, wind, wood, waste) amounting to 0.9 percent. World energy consumption was growing about 2.3% per year. The burning of fossil fuels produces around 21.3 billion tonnes (21.3 gigatonnes) of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, but it is estimated that natural processes can only absorb about half of that amount, so there is a net increase of 10.65 billion tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year (one tonne of atmospheric carbon is equivalent to 44/12 or 3.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide)" (source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossil_fuel )

Because the automobile is a major contributer to the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, isn't it time that city planners and Government leaders on this planet, find ways to make public  transportation a more attractive alternative to humans? "  "In cities across the globe, the personal automobile is the single greatest polluter, as emissions from a billion vehicles on the road add up to a planet-wide problem!!" (source:http://www.nutramed.com/environment/carsepa.htm    "The largest source of CO2 emissions globally is the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas in power plants, automobiles, industrial facilities and other sources.A number of specialized industrial production processes and product uses such as mineral production, metal production and the use of petroleum-based products can also lead to CO2 emissions.: (source:http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/emissions/co2_human.html

In addition all nation on this planet need to come together and begin using "carbon-capture" technology to reduce the amount of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere! The time to start using this technology and the time to reduce your carbon footprint on this planet is now!!

Analysis of Shirov-Alekseev, 3rd Lublin Union Memorial Tournament 2011

I have analyzed another  Grandmaster chess game  for my blog! This game comes from the recent 3rd Lublin Union Memorial Tournament which was played in Lublin, Poland from May 15th-May 31st and won by Grandmaster Alexei Shirov of Spain. The game I have analyzed includes Shirov as one of the participants. In this  analyzed game he plays white against GM Evgeny Alekseev. What is amazing about this game is that GM Shirov plays the King's Gambit opening. He plays a very interesting tactical game which lands him in trouble. However due to errors by GM Alekseev, Shirov is able to come back and win the game in an amazing fashion! I hope you enjoy  playing through this analysis. GM Shirov is currently the 32nd highest-rated player in the World with an elo of 2709. GM Alekseev currently has a elo rating of  2673 which makes him the 70th-highest-rated player in the World. I had the World's strongest chess program, Deep Rybka 4.1x64 analyze this game for 1 hour in analysis mode to help me analyze this game. You can also find this analysis on page one of my blog in the Chessviewer Deluxe game index at the bottom of the page as game #28.

Greenhouse Ocean Study: a warning of what may be in our future!

According to an article entitled, "Greenhouse Ocean Study Offers Warning For Future" which you can read by clicking on the highlighted title in the first line above,
"The mass extinction of marine life in our oceans during prehistoric times is a warning that the same could happen again due to high levels of greenhouse gases, according to new research." In a study by two
scientists concerning 'greenhouse oceans'—"those that have been depleted of oxygen, suffering increases in carbon dioxide and temperature."

"Professor  Thomas Wagner says the results of their research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), has relevance for our modern world: "We know that 'dead zones' are rapidly growing in size and number in seas and oceans across the globe," he said. "These are areas of water that are lacking in oxygen and are suffering from increases of CO2, rising temperatures, nutrient run-off from agriculture and other factors."

"Their research points to a mass mortality in the oceans at a time when the Earth was going through a greenhouse effect. High levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and rising temperatures led to a severe lack of oxygen (hypoxia) in the water that marine animals depend upon."

"What's alarming to us as scientists is that there were only very slight natural changes that resulted in the onset of hypoxia in the deep ocean," said Professor Martin Kennedy. "This occurred relatively rapidly—in periods of hundreds of years, or possibly even less—not gradually over longer, geological time scales, suggesting that the Earth's oceans are in a much more delicate balance during greenhouse conditions than originally thought, and may respond in a more abrupt fashion to even subtle changes in temperature and CO2 levels."

This certainly is shocking and disturbing news! However maybe this news will get all of us out of our complacent attitude toward what is happening on this planet and focus us to work together to deal with this
situation. To many scientists an answer to the problems relating to greenhouse gases involve changing the way we as individuals and as groups act in our World. What can an individual do to reduce his or her Carbon Dioxide Footprint on this Planet? Plenty! Here are  links to some websites  which  provide some of  the ways you as an individual can reduce your Carbon Dioxide Footprint on the planet:

Amazing new research concerning the South Georgia Island

Some amazing new research findings concerning our World have been revealed in an article entitled,"Unexpected Biodiversity Encountered in Southern Ocean". This article, written by Nick  Engelfried  at the GreenAnswers.com website discusses the fact that scientists have discovered that waters in the South Ocean near the Antarctic (see map above)  are actually full of life!!  According to this article, "the continental shelf around South Georgia Island  "may harbor even more species than that surrounding tropical islands long recognized for their plentiful biodiversity." Here is a link to a video entitled

"Epic Journey to South Georgia Island" which I found on Youtube. This video shows some of the life which exists on this Island:

http://youtu.be/GDsVzVFAWrY

Mr  Engelfried  goes on to state the following:
"In a study recently published in the online peer-reviewed journal PLoS ONE, scientists working for the British Antarctic Survey catalogued marine organisms found on South Georgia Island’s continental shelf. By systematically sampling the waters around the island, the researchers made records of over 17,700 individual organisms belonging to 1,445 species. Together these species represented twenty-two phyla, or major groups, of animals!!.  The authors of the study say their findings show the marine biodiversity of South Georgia rivals or surpasses that of tropical islands like the Galapagos!!"

Isn't this an amazing research finding! It just shows that we humans  develop cognitions about
what should and should not be occurring in a particular ecological area of this planet, only to learn later that our thoughts about something were totally wrong from a scientific perspective!  To read this entire article of
Nick please click on the following link:

Battling white-nose syndrome in bats

Image: A species of Fruit bat Source of photo:http://www.biology-blog.com/blogs/archives/Animal-science-blog/July-20-2007.html
To read an article entitled, "Battling white-nose syndrome in bats" please click on the following link:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/05/29/2337052/battling-white-nose-syndrome-in.html

It is great to see the United States Federal Government getting involved in helping bats in the United States!

"White-nose syndrome (WNS) was first noted among dead and hibernating bats found in caves near
Albany, New York, by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
beginning in February 2007. Affected bats had a white substance on their face and wings.
In early 2008, “white-nosed” bats were once again seen in sites where bats hibernate
(hibernacula). Since March 2008, biologists estimate that over a million bats have died
from this disease, many of which have been little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus). White-nose
syndrome mortality has been documented in 13 states in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest,
and in 2 Canadian provinces (Ontario and Quebec)."
(source:http://www.nwhc.usgs.gov/disease_information/white-nose_syndrome/ )

For those of you who do not know, bats are a very essential animal in our World! These animals
pollinate  certain species of trees in this World, (and are the only pollinators for these trees: "(for
instance the the African baobab tree and the Australian ironwood. "Many important tropical
fruits, such as wild bananas, avocados, figs and mangoes, are dispersed mostly by bats"
(source:http://wildlife.state.co.us/WildlifeSpecies/Profiles/Mammals/BatsofColorado/TheImportanceofBats.htm )  In addition, "Fruitbats also disperse plant seeds to new places and
habitats". (source:http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/mammal/eutheria/chirolh.html ) and these
species is especially important in controlling insect populations (especially insects known
to feed on human crops."In temperate and tropical ecosystems, bats are the main consumers of night-flying insects."

"Bats are also highly important in the ecology of caves. Because deep caverns receive little or no
sunlight to sustain plant life, the energy to support cave ecosystems must be delivered by animals.
Because bats often use deep caverns for roost sites and may gather in large numbers, their droppings
(guano) provide energy and nutrients on which other organisms such as bacteria, insects, mice, rats and
even fish can survive. In fact, many entire cave ecosystems are the result of historical visits by bats, and
caves without bats often are biotically impoverished."
 (source:http://wildlife.state.co.us/WildlifeSpecies/Profiles/Mammals/BatsofColorado/TheImportanceo
fBats.htm )

Bats are another species of life on this planet which have gotten a bad rap from the media.

Sure there is a species of bat which eats blood and it is true that some bats do carry diseases,
however, can you image what life would be like in the summer in your country if you could not
go outside because there were so many mosquitoes and flies?  We humans also carry diseases!
Please read this article, it indicates some of the myths humans have created about the bat species":

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0204/feature7/online_extra.html

Did you know that bats are the only mammals which are capable of flying? That is the truth!  Thank

goodness they can otherwise we might not have any crops left due to predation from insects!  Sadly,
in some parts of the World bat populations are endangered.  "Of the forty-four species native to
North America, six are officially listed as endangered and eighteen more are candidates for listing
under the federal Endangered Species Act. The major cause of the declines in our bat populations is
thought to be primarily careless destruction by human activities, including deforestation and cave or
mine closures."
(source:

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/bats_tx.htm

"In a paper published in the journal Science, bat researchers estimated that a single colony of 150
brown bats in the U.S. state of Indiana eats around 1.3 million pest insects a year, and that the
value of such bats to agriculture may be around $22.9 billion a year."
"They criticized a lack of funds and efforts to save the bats and to find out more about

what is causing their widespread population decline. The current "wait-and-see" approach is
unacceptable, they said."

"Bats are among the most overlooked, yet economically important, non-domesticated animals in
North America, and their conservation is important for the integrity of ecosystems and in the best
interest of both national and international economies," the scientists, led by Justin Boyles
of the University of Pretoria in South Africa, wrote in the journal."
"The life histories of these flying, nocturnal mammals -- characterized by long generation times

and low reproductive rates -- mean that population recovery is unlikely for decades or
even centuries, if at all."

(source:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/31/us-bats-whitenose-agriculture-idUSTRE72U5UJ20110331 )

" Nineteen species of bats have been recorded in Canada, and 17 of them are regular residents.

Bats are long-lived mammals, the current record for being a banded little brown bat from a mine in eastern Ontario that survived more than 35 year." It is interesting to note that:

"Bats are not blind. The eyes of many bats that eat insects are inconspicuous, but bats see very well
and use vision for many of the things they do. However, as far as we know, Canadian species
use echolocation to locate their prey, and their large ears reflect the importance of sounds in their lives."

"Disturbance by people is probably one of the main threats to the survival of bats. Disturbances in
nursery colonies often result in abandoned young which do not survive the experience. Disturbance
during hibernation rouses bats, which in turn forces them to burn energy they otherwise would use in
hibernation. One disturbance of this sort costs a little brown bat the energy that would sustain it over
60 days of hibernation. Effective conservation means protecting bat roosts from people."

(source:http://www.hww.ca/hww2.asp?id=63 )

Please make sure that you do not bother roosting bats, this species is essential for the World's ecosystem!
Scientists have learned that the White-nose syndrome is caused by the  fungus Geomyces destructans.
Source:
  http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/31/us-bats-whitenose-agriculture-idUSTRE72U5UJ20110331

Hopefully this new research finding  will allow scientists to find a way to prevent this fungus
from developing into White-nose  syndrome!

Declaration of Rights for Cetaceans: Whales and Dolphins

Here is your chance to help other  life on our planet!
Please read the following document: "Declaration of Rights for Cetaceans: Whales and Dolphins" and then sign this document by clicking on the following link:

 http://cetaceanconservation.com.au/cetaceanrights/

It is so important that we grant Cetaceans the legal rights they deserve! These wonderful  friends of ours deserve to be protected in law from abuse, murder and exploitation! Only if you sign this document will our cetacean friends have protection from extinction which they so desperately need! Some humans on this planet think they can do anything  they want to Cetaceans and we have to stop them from doing these awful things to these intelligent and incredibly social friends! Thank you for taking the time to do this and please share this website with your friends and family!

As stated at the Whale and Dolphin  Conservation Society homepage:

Cetaceans do not need ‘human’ rights, what we are seeking is the recognition that cetaceans have their own set of rights, including the right to life, freedom of movement and residence within their natural environment and the right not to be held in captivity or servitude, or be subject to cruel treatment, or be removed from their natural environment. We do not want to ‘give’ these rights, but instead to ‘recognise’ that these rights already exist."  (source:http://www2.wdcs.org/blog/index.php?/archives/393-Cetacean-Rights,-human-wrongs-and-moral-progress.html )

Thank you for helping our Cetacean friends!!

Gelfand  will now face World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand in the next World Chess Championship match. The last game of the Gelfand-Grischuk match was a tense affair. Gelfand has the advantage of the White pieces and began by playing the Queen's Gambit pawn formation with 1.d4 and 2.c4. Grischuk answered with 1...Nf6 and 2...g6. after Gelfand played  2.g3 Grischuk decided to play the Grunfeld Defense. The two players played known opening theory in the Grunfeld Defense until Gelfand's thirteenth move, when the Israeli GM played the theoretical novelty of 13.b3 (Prior to this game  the only move which had been played in this position was 13.Rd1 ). Congratulations to Boris Gelfand and best wishes to you in your match against Viswanathan Anand in  the future.Congratulations also to GM Alexander Grischuk for playing such wonderful chess in the FIDE Candidates matches!   . Here is some analysis of this game. I had the chess program Deep Fritz 12 analyze this game for 2 hours on my quad core computer. I then also had the program Deep Hiarcs 13.2 analyze the game and have added my own comments. I also used Chessbase Megadatabase 2011 to help me explain and analyze the opening moves of the game. I hope you enjoy playing through this analysis! If you are using the Firefox browser and cannot see the Chessviewer Deluxe board below in this blog post I apologize. Teens undergoing plastic surgery to avoid bullying!

According to an article entitled, "Teens undergo plastic surgery to avoid bullying", which you can read by clicking on this link: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/307055

"Teens and kids even younger are undergoing cosmetic surgery to stop bullying by peers  More minors, especially young women, in the United States and Great Britain are undergoing surgical alteration of unusual -- or what they perceive as unattractive -- facial or body features, to counteract bullying, rather than to emulate their celebrity idols". To read the remainder of this article please click on the link above.

What is going on in the schools and homes  on this planet? If teens are so worried about being bullied this suggests that these same teens have possibly witnessed other teens being bullied because of the way they look, doesn't it? Also this suggests these teens may have read something in the news or on television regarding the fact that someone of their age level was being bullied because of their physical appearance! Certainly I am aware that in the past few years some teens (of both sexes) have committed suicide because they were being bullied at school and after nothing was done about the bullying!  The fact that teens are indicating that they are undergoing plastic surgery to possibly help them not be bullied in schools is a very troubling admission regarding what is going on in the Schools in the United States and Great Britain! I thought that many school districts had developed programs to educate children about bullying so bullying would not become a serious problem in schools. . Apparently these programs are not working if teens are so worried  about being bullied that they are actually having plastic surgery to avoid the possibility of being bullied in the future!

If you live in Canada   are of school age and are being bullied please tell someone you are being bullied:tell a teacher or your mother or father. You can also report a bully if you live in Canada by going to the following website:

http://stopabully.ca/about/  click on the folowing link to find out what to do next if you are being bullied at the present  time:  http://stopabully.ca/report/

I know what it feels like to be bullied! I am a survivor of bullying! Don't do what I did, I did not tell anyone about  the bullying and because of this I am still suffering today from being bullied!

The fourth game of the match was played today in Kazan. GM Gelfand had the advantage of the white pieces in today's game and began by playing 1.Nf3. The game soon transposed to the Three Knights variation of the English Opening. The players agreed to a draw after only 18 moves which means the match is still tied by a score of  2-2 after four games on the Final. The next game will be played tomorrow in Kazan with Grischuk having the advantage of the white pieces in the game. Here are the moves from today's game:

The second and third  games of the match were drawn. The players now have a rest day on Sunday and resume the match on Monday with game 4. In the fourth game on Monday, GM Gelfand will have the advantage of the White pieces. I do not understand why GM Grischuk would agree to a draw in only 14 moves with the white pieces in game 3! 2011 FIDE Candidates Final match Grischuk-Gelfand :game one drawn

The first game of the FIDE Candidates Final was played today in Kazan. Grandmaster Alexander Grischuk had the advantage of the white pieces and began the game by playing the move .1.d4. His opponent, GM Boris Geland replied with the opening move 1..Nf6. Grischuk then entered the Queen's Gambit pawn formation by playing 2.c4 and Gelfand played the classical reply of 2...e6.The two players then continued the first game by playing these moves:  3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 Be7 5.Bf4 (for obvious reasons this variation is known as the Bf4  variation of the Queen's Gambit Declined.). This first game ended on move 49 with the two players agreeing to a draw. The second game of the match will be played tomorrow in Kazan with Gelfand having the advantage of the white pieces. I will have some analysis of this game later. For now, here are all the moves from today's game:

Gelfand and Grischuk advance to the 2011 FIDE Candidates matches final

Grandmaster Boris Gelfand of Israel (photo above left) and Grandmaster Alexander Grischuk have advanced to the FIDE Candidates final match in Kazan. Gelfand and his opponent Gata Kamsky of the USA had to play a tie-break after ending their match tied by a score of 2-2. This situation also happened in the other semi-final match between Vladimir Kramnik and Alexander Grischuk. As a result the two matches began the tie-break with rapid chess games. These two tie-break games ended in draws in both matches, which as a result of the rules for this competition, meant that the players would decide who would move onto the final by a blitz playoff. In the end Grischuk and Gelfand both won one of the blitz games to move onto the FIDE Candidates final match. Congratulations to both Boris Gelfand and Alexander Grischuk. Congratulations also to Vladimir Kramnik and Gata Kamsky for making it to the semifinal round and for fighting until the last pawn.

The 2011 FIDE Candidates final match between Boris Gelfand and Alexander Grischuk will begin this Wednesday in Kazan,Russia The match will consist of six games.: The time control for the Final is: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves and then 60 minutes for 20 moves. plus an increment for each move made.
If the two players are tied in score at the end of six games, they will enter a tie-break to determine who will face India's Vishy Anand in the next FIDE World Chess Championship. According to Chessbase Megadatabase 2011 Grischuk holds a 12 win -5 loss -21 draw advantage over Gelfand in their head-to-head matchup over their chess careers. (These include blitz and rapid chess games).

Here are all of the playoff  games from these two matches which concluded today:

Thoughts worth thinking about

"Our subconscious minds have no sense of humor, play no jokes and cannot tell the difference between reality and an imagined thought or image. What we continually think about eventually will manifest in our lives."-Sidney Madwed

Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every woman and man present their views without penalty, there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.- Albert Einstein Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. - Leo Buscaglia

A person's true wealth is the good he or she does in the world. - Mohammed

Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty. -Albert Einstein

The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others. - Ghandi

The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves. - Helen Keller

Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism. Confronting your fears and allowing yourself the right to be human can, paradoxically, make yourself a happier and more productive person. - Dr. David M. Burns
