Why does the Alberta Government have to do this?

According to an article entitled, "Alberta Wilderness Association calls for 5-year suspension on grizzly bear hunt", which you can read by clicking on the following link: http://www.globaltoronto.com/Alberta+Wilderness+Association+calls+year+suspension+grizzly+bear+hunt/4529910/story.html

it has been revealed to me  (and to everyone who read this article) that each and every year the Government of Alberta actually considers whether or not to allow hunters to hunt endangered species in the province!  The writer of this article and yours truly want to know why members of the Ruling Progressive Conservative party of Alberta would even consider such a thing!  The fact that members of the PC party are actually considering removing an endangered species desgnation from some Alberta wildlife species speaks volumes about how much these elected members of our Provincial ruling Government care about the Wildlife in this Province! Who is educating these politicians (if anyone) regarding which species in Alberta are endangered and what the population numbers of these endangered species are in the Province? How accurately  are the populations of these endangered species being counted to ensure that their numbers are sufficient to prevent their species from becoming extinct in this province?

The  residents of this province want to know!

Le Requin quote:Please share

I found a very wonderful quote which I wanted to share with all of my visitors and friends. Here it is:

"The greatest human accomplishment you can achieve is the realization of where you are with respect to everyone else and everything in the world, the realization that everything you do impacts the world, the realization that you can change your world for the better, and the realization that you will do whatever it takes to make your world the best world that you can imagine." - Le Requin

Government of Alberta intimidating doctors over Health Care!

According to an article entitled, "Calgary doctor cites intimidation over emails",  the  ruling Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta is deliberately intimidating Doctors in the province to stop speaking out against the state of Health care in the province of Alberta! To read this article please click on the following link:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/story/2011/03/18/calgary-doctor-maybaum-health-care-intimidation.html

Firstly why is the Government of Alberta doing this when such behavior on the part of Doctors is meant to improve the health care system in Albeta? Secondly, if the Government of Alberta is sending threats to Doctors
doesn't this suggest the Government is trying to create a state which resembles Nazi Germany before and after World War 2??  If these doctors are right about what is happening in the Health Care system and they are receiving threatening email, this certainly suggests that Premier Stelmach and the Health Minister of th is province are only interested in maintaining the sorry state of health care in this province!

If you live in Alberta and do not agree with me regarding how I perceive the current state of Health care in the Province, then please visit the following website and  read what a patient of a doctor had to recently experience in an Alberta Hospital!!:

21 grizzly bears were known to have died in Alberta last year!

According to an article entitled, "21 dead in 2010" written by  Hamish MacLean and published in The Canmore Leader",  21 grizzly bears were known to have died in Alberta last year up one from the year before!!
(source:http://www.canmoreleader.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3032244 ).

This fact must suggest to you and to all of us that the Alberta Goverment is not doing enough to conserve the Grizzly Bear population in the Province of Alberta!  In addition, it has been indicated in the article that
accidental deaths of grizzly bears such as kills on Alberta roads had seen an increase over the last three years!

I do not believe the Grizzly Bear population of Alberta can continue to take losses in this magnitude if the species is going to be able to survive in our planet. I hope I am wrong about this!

Why should we care that the Grizzly Bear species might go extinct in Alberta?

"Grizzly bears play a highly complex role in ecosystems.  In addition to predation on elk and moose calves, grizzlies disperse seeds over large areas, and contribute to nutrient cycling.  Dubbed “ecosystem engineers” by some, the foraging activities of grizzly bears may build or change the ecosystem.  For example, coastal brown bears transfer salmon-derived nitrogen into riparian ecosystems when they kill, move, eat, and leave some fish in the forest."   (source:http://keystoneconservation.typepad.com/keystone_conservation/keystone-species.html  )

"While foraging for tree roots, plant bulbs, or ground squirrels, bears stir up the soil. This process not only helps grizzlies access their food, but also increases species richness in alpine ecosystems." (source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grizzly_bear ) ."Grizzlies directly regulate prey populations, and also help prevent overgrazing in forests by controlling the populations of other species in the food chain." (Source:Peek, J.; Beecham, J.; Garshelis, D.; Messier, F.; Miller, S. & Dale, S. (2003), Management of Grizzly Bears in British Columbia: A Review by and Independent Scientific Panel

 .)

These scientific facts concerning Grizzly Bears show why the Government of Alberta and all Albertans should be concerned with the loss of this many Grizzly bears in one year!

Canada's wetlands threatened by Industrial activity!

The Pew Environment Group indicates that Canada's boreal forest contains more unfrozen freshwater than any other ecosystem, totaling more than 197 million acres of surface fresh water. This organization has just stated that Canada's boreal forest must not be mined or forested in any way, in order to ensure that lakes and rivers are preserved thereby ensuring Arctic sea ice can formed.

"Canadian boreal lakes and river delta sediment, peatlands and wetlands are also the largest on-land carbon storehouse in the world, storing more than 400 trillion pounds of carbon, the study said."

"Maintaining its flows, which contribute a majority of the freshwater input into the Arctic Ocean, is critical to forming Arctic ice as they decrease the salinity of the sea water, allowing it to freeze more quickly and easily."

Forestry, oil and gas extraction, mining, and hydropower generation is rapidly increasing and negatively impacting the quality and quantity of boreal water and the surrounding ecosystems, the study warned.

"The report concludes that governments should protect entire river, lake and wetland ecosystems by keeping intact at least 50 percent of Canada's boreal forest."
I hope the members of the Government of Alberta read this report and are prepared to keep this amount of Alberta's forests intact!  "The Boreal Forest Region comprises 48 percent of Alberta!! (source: http://raysweb.net/specialplaces/pages/boreal.html )

Sharks don't cry - Stop finning!

Please watch this video and tell your children and friends to watch it! This video shows what is happening to the sharks on our Planet! Sharks occupied this planet long before us humans and they have the right to be here without being overkilled by our species! Sharks are crucial to  the survival of all life on the planet including our species! Without sharks, there will be too many producers in the Oceans which will consume all the plankton and prevent the creation of oxygen on this planet!

Alberta Tory Government negligent in Management of Grizzly Bear Habitat

Image:Excerpt from Alberta Government map showing Castle Special Place  source:http://www.castlespecialplace.ca/map.html

According to an article entitled, "Castle’s special place no longer secure for grizzly bears", which appeared in the Naton News on Wednesday, March 16,2011, The Government of Alberta has been found to have been negligent in managing the habitat  of the province's Grizzly Bear population! As stated in the article,
"A new satellite study in the biologically rich public lands of the Castle Special Management Area in the Rocky Mountains of southwestern Alberta found more than 1,200 kilometres (km) of roads and trails."

How can the Grizzly bears in this area be expected to have a decent chance of surviving when so much human activity is found within this area?  In this article which you can read by clicking on the following link:

http://www.nantonnews.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3026439  it is stated:

"The Crown of the Continent is one of only two linkages within the Yellowstone to Yukon region through which grizzly bear populations in Canada and those in the U.S. remain connected to each other.
Using high resolution satellite imagery and field survey, the study examined the extent of roads and trails within the Castle Special Management Area and analyzed these disturbances in terms of their use by motorized vehicles and their potential impact on grizzly bear habitat security areas.
Our study found that the total length of roads and trails that are potentially used by off-highway vehicles within the Castle is 1,283 km.
This overall density for the Castle wildland area is more than double, and in some watersheds more than triple, the threshold of 0.6 km/km2 within important grizzly bear areas, as recommended in the Alberta Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan."

"In addition, this study identified the existence of trails used by OHVs that are not shown on maps published by the Alberta government."
"Of the area field surveyed, the study found that there were about twice as many roads and trails being used by OHVs than were authorized by the Alberta government."

Additional disturbances will occur following Alberta government-approved commercial logging, which will entail new roads.
The report concludes that the Castle Special Management Area is no longer secure for grizzly bears and that sustainable environmental management of the Castle wilderness is not occurring.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shame on the Government of Alberta for allowing this to happen to the habitat of the Grizzly Bears in this province! Why is the Government going to future decrease the area which Grizzly Bears have to live in this province by approving commercial logging in these areas which were designated for Grizzly Bear Habitat?

If you care about the future of Grizzly bears on the planet, please  tell this to the Premier of the Province of Alberta, Ed Stelmach by clicking on the following link:

Scientists discover Anti-anxiety circuit in the Brain

A new study supports the role of a brain region called the amygdala in processing anxiety. In this 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) rendering of a human brain, functional MRI (fMRI) activation of the amygdala is highlighted in red. (Credit: NIMH Clinical Brain Disorders Branch)

According to the Stanford University website, "Stimulation of a distinct brain circuit that lies within a brain structure typically associated with fearfulness produces the opposite effect: Its activity, instead of triggering or increasing anxiety, counters it."This discovery could lead to new treatments for anxiety disorders, said one of the researchers. “The discovery of a novel circuit whose action is to reduce anxiety, rather than increase it, could point to an entire strategy of anti-anxiety treatment,” To read more about this discovery please click on the following link:

It sure would be wonderful if this new discovery could lead  to the development of a long term pharmaceutical or treatment for those of us who suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder!

New evidence that the Universe we live in is expanding

A team of scientists headed by  Adam Riess, a professor of physics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, said in a NASA release that they have new evidence which reinforce the idea that the Universe you and I live in, is expanding.

"Riess's work gives new evidence that the universe is in fact expanding at an increasing rate because it is filled with a dark energy that works in opposition to gravity. Dark energy is a type of energy that astronomers believe permeates all space." Wolverines found to be more numerous in the United States than thought

According to an article entitled, "Wolverines Stage a Comeback" which you can read by clicking on the following link: http://www.voanews.com/english/news/usa/places/Wolverines-Stage-a-Comeback-117578674.html, scientists are finding more evidence of an increase in the population of Wolverines in the United States. This certainly is  good news if you love animals! Wolverines are such an elusive animal it is difficult for scientists to get a good indication of their population numbers throughout the entire World. Hopefully these populations of Wolverines will keep increasing in the United States so that these amazing animals will continue to roam the lands of many different countries. By sheer coincidence it is interesting that at the present time I am reading a book about Wolverines entitled, "The Wolverine Way", by Douglas H. Chadwick. Mr. Chadwick is a wildlife biologist by profession and his book is extremely interesting and informative! I highly recommend this book!

Great White Sharks in peril?

Researchers who conducted a unique shark census in the northeastern Pacific Ocean were surprised to determine that there are fewer Great White sharks in the area than previously believed.

"The study, published in the journal Biology Letters, is the first rigorous scientific estimate of white shark numbers in the northeast Pacific Ocean, and represents one of the best estimates among the world's three known white-shark populations."

To me this suggests that a plan must be developed by nations whose lands touch the waters where these sharks live in order to conserve these sharks!

And abstract of this study can be read by clicking on the following link:

Science closer to solving Colony Collapse disorder?

To read an article entitled,
"Researchers honing in on bee colony collapse disorder" please click on the following link:

Accordng to an article entitled "Pheromone increases foraging honey bees, leads to healthier hives" which you can read by clicking on the following link:

http://scienceblog.com/42692/pheromone-increases-foraging-honey-bees-leads-to-healthier-hives/

"The application of a naturally occurring pheromone to honey bee test colonies increases colony growth resulting in stronger hives overall, according to a new study conducted by scientists at Oregon State University and Texas A&M University."  "A pheromone (from Greek φέρω phero "to bear" + hormone from Greek ὁρμή - "impetus") is a secreted or excreted chemcial factor that triggers a social response in members of the same species.  Pheromones are chemicals capable of acting outside the body of the secreting individual to impact the behavior of the receiving individual. These chemical messengers are transported outside of the body and result in a direct developmental effect on hormone levels or behavioral change" (source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pheromone )

"The study, which appeared this week in the journal, PLoS ONE, comes amid national concern over the existence of honey bee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) — a combination of events that result in the death of a bee colony. The causes behind CCD remain unknown, but researchers are focusing on four possible contributing factors: disease, pests, environmental conditions and nutrition."

What can an individual do to help bees during this time of Colony Collapse Disorder?

Here are a few things you can do:

Reduce or eliminate pesticides in your yard.

Leave dandelions in your yard. Their flowers are a welcome sight to bees in early spring.

Plant an apple tree; bees love the blossoms.

Another possible aid to bees is to possess a smartphone when you are outside. How can having a smartphone help bees? Please read the article "Smartphones may  help prevent bee hive collapses" by clicking on the following link:

http://wirelessfederation.com/news/35853-smartphones-may-help-prevent-bee-hive-collapses/

To my way of thinking Media coverage of Colony Collapse disorder has been shameful and totally inadequate!! I am not alone in my condemnation of the media relating to CCD. To read an article entitled,

Happy 136th Birthday Maurice Ravel! March 7, 1875 – December 28, 1937

Today, March 7,2011 is the birthday of composer Maurice Ravel who lived from
March 7, 1875 until December 28, 1937. My favorite work of Ravel's is his Piano Concerto for the left hand which he composed between 1929 and 1930. This work
was commissioned by the Austrian pianist, Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during World War I.

You can listen to a performance of this Work by clicking on the following links:

How much do you know about beavers?

How much do you know about these important animals?

If you believe you know a great deal about beavers, guess again. According to an article at the Globe and Mail website written by Erin Anderssen entitled, "The beaver's new brand-eco saviour,"

"ponds with active beaver lodges had nine times more water during droughts than ponds without dams." In addition this article indicates that,  the presence of beavers in an area  result in the "raising (of)  the water table and cause an increase the  biodiversity found in an area. Beavers even cleani up pollutants left by humans in an area!

One other important thing which beavers do is their presence in an area  increase the populations of endangered fish stocks  in an area!  To read this article please click on the following link:

Thoughts worth thinking about

"Our subconscious minds have no sense of humor, play no jokes and cannot tell the difference between reality and an imagined thought or image. What we continually think about eventually will manifest in our lives."-Sidney Madwed

Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every woman and man present their views without penalty, there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.- Albert Einstein Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. - Leo Buscaglia

A person's true wealth is the good he or she does in the world. - Mohammed

Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty. -Albert Einstein

The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others. - Ghandi

The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves. - Helen Keller

Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism. Confronting your fears and allowing yourself the right to be human can, paradoxically, make yourself a happier and more productive person. - Dr. David M. Burns

Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures. -His Holiness The Dalai Lama

Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. -

Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them. That's the essence of inhumanity. -George Bernard Shaw

Ego's trick is to make us lose sight of our interdependence. That kind of ego-thought gives us a perfect justification to look out only for ourselves. But that is far from the truth. In reality we all depend on each other and we have to help each other. The husband has to help his wife, the wife has to help the husband, the mother has to help her children, and the children are supposed to help the parents too, whether they want to or not.-Gehlek Rinpoche Source: "The Best Buddhist Writing 2005 pg. 165

The hostile attitude of conquering nature ignores the basic interdependence of all things and events---that the world beyond the skin is actually an extension of our own bodies---and will end in destroying the very environment from which we emerge and upon which our whole life depends.
