FIDE Grand Prix:Nalchik:round 5 results and standings,round 6 pairings

Two games had decisive results in the fifth round of play today at the FIDE Nalchik Grand Prix of chess. Rustam Kasimdzhanov, playing black defeated Vassily Ivanchuk in 25 moves,the opening was a Queen's Gambit Exchange variation. In the other decisive game of the round, Vladimir Akopian defeated Gata Kamsky, with Akopian playing white. Kamsky decided to play the French Defense, Akopian responded with the Tarrasch variation, and Kamsky was forced to resign after 98 moves had been played due to the fact that Akopian had a forced checkmate.

In other games, Peter Svidler drew with Boris Gelfand, the opening was a Semi-Slav Defense with 6.Bg5 (eco B43),this variation is known as the Hastings variation. Karjakin and Mamedyarov played 34 moves of a Sicilian Defense:Taimanov variation, before agreeing to a draw. Grischuk playing white against Leko essayed a Queen's Gambit, and the players entered a Semi-Slav (the same eco number as the Svidler-Gelfand game, with a different set of moves).The result of this game was a draw. Bacrot and Eljanov played a Ruy Lopez Opening, with Eljanov chosing to play the Flohr-Zaitsev variation as black, the players agreed to a draw after 39 moves, despite the fact that Elijanov was up a pawn. In the other game of the day, Alekseev and Aronian also played a Ruy Lopez Opening. Alekseev playing white, allowed Aronian to play the Marshall Gambit. The two players played 16 moves of known opening theory in the Marshall before Aronian played a new move with 16...Qf5. Prior to this game only the moves 16...Qh5 and 16...Rae8 had been used by the player of the black pieces.
As a consequence of these games here are the standings after five rounds of play:

1. GM Grischuk 2748 3½ points,

tied for 2nd-5th places are: GM Karjakin 2721, GM Leko 2751,
GM Aronian 2754 , and GMAlekseev all have 3 points

tied for 6th-9th places are: GM Kamsky 2720 GM Kasimdzhanov 2695 ,GM Bacrot 2728 and GM Svidler 2726 all have 2 1/2 points.

tied for 10th-13th places are: GM Mamedyarov 2725 ,GM Eljanov 2693 , GM Akopian, 2696 GM Gelfand 2733, all have 2 points,

14th place: GM Ivanchuk 2746 1 1/2 points.
