"B.C. Solicitor General John van Dongen, the province's top law enforcement official, has been suspended from driving for four months because of traffic tickets for what he said was "excessive speeding."
Van Dongen, who is also the minister of public safety and is running for re-election as a Liberal in Abbotsford South, issued a written statement Friday, saying he "accepted the temporary prohibition." (source:http://www.cbc.ca/canada/bcvotes2009/story/2009/04/24/bc-van-dongen-driving.html
This situation should be an embarrassment to both the Liberal party of British Columbia and the Liberal Party of Canada. It is bad enough that van Dongen was breaking the law, but to break the law repeatedly over a period of time..what sort of message does that send to the populace? Speeding is one of the main causes of car accidents, and van Dongen is just lucky he did not cause an accident and hurt or kill innocent people. But what is worse is that he was given a job in which he was responsible for ensuring safe communities through policing and crime prevention, victims' services and corrections, and he himself was a habitual law-breaker, is even worse! In my opinion, Van Dongen should resign his post, as he has tarnished his party, his government, as well as damaged the image of the Federal Liberal Party of Canada, which he is a member of.
